Stationery usage - January 2024

Using all the pens (and maybe pencils, but mostly pens).

Last month, I started tracking the pen(cil)s that I use every day, because I bought a lot of pens last year and now that I have a lot that I like (plus I need to save up for non-stationery things this year!), I guess I should use them!

I already time track, and when I heard about penaddict’s plans to track their pen usage, it got me curious about mine!

For the data, I only tracked whether or not I used a pen(cil) each day and not how much I used it. So a pen I used to write a whole page would get a +1 on that day, and a pen I used to check a checkbox also would get a +1.

Some results from the month of January:

  • Most used overall1: Uni Jetstream 4+1, a four-color multi-pen with a mechanical pencil (which I forgot was there until just yesterday!). I swapped out the 0.5mm refills it came with for 0.38mm refills. I have other multi-pens, but reached for this one every time because I like the weight and balance of it.
  • Most used fountain pen2: Pilot Custom 823 inked with Diamine Blue Black. This was the first Pilot Custom 823 I ever tried and I was so surprised by how smooth the nib is. If I could only have one fountain pen, I’d be happy with this one.
  • Most used model3: TWSBI ECO . At the beginning of 2023 I had 0 TWSBI ECOs. Then I got the Indigo Bronze, and a whole bunch more4 followed after that. I mostly use them for waterproof inks for journaling. I tend to leave inked pens laying around for months, even if I don’t use them, so I like that these TWSBI ECOs don’t dry out so easily.

  1. But ink-wise, probably the least used of of this list of 3. ↩︎

  2. Also the second most used pen overall. ↩︎

  3. Counting only 1 point per model per day. ↩︎

  4. Nine. I bought nine TWSBI ECOs in 2023. ↩︎
